Two destinations in this guide are inside Indianapolis. Driving Wind Berry Farms, on the northwest side, is an urban farm with a small pumpkin patch, and its Pumpkin Palooza is October 10. Waterman’s Family Farm, on the southeast side, holds its Fall Festival through November 1, with a corn maze, a hayride to the pumpkin patch and a pumpkin-eating dinosaur.

Best Farms for Pumpkin Picking

For picking your own pumpkins without paying admission, Tuttle Orchards has a 20-acre patch, and every carving pumpkin is $10 regardless of size. Hogan Farms sells pumpkins from $2 to $20 depending on size. Spencer Farm and Pleasant View Orchard also charge no admission and run rides out to their patches on weekends, and Spencer’s hayrides are free.

At farms that charge admission, pumpkins are usually still sold separately. Russell Farms lists an average carving pumpkin at about $5–$12, and Waterman’s Family Farm sells pumpkins from $5. Piney Acres Farm and Kelsay Farms sell pumpkins but don’t have a patch to pick from.

Best Corn Mazes, Rides and Play Areas

For corn mazes, Russell Farms has the most choices, with 5- and 10-acre scavenger-hunt mazes plus two low-wall mazes. Kelsay Farms has a 7-acre maze where flashlights are allowed after dark, and Conner Prairie has a short maze and a long maze, with its Haunted Trail opening after dark.

For rides and play areas, Lark Ranch includes country-fair rides and a mile-long train ride with admission, and Dull’s Tree Farm includes more than 45 activities, from a tractor-tire mountain to a ropes course and giant slides. Stuckey Farm has 37 apple varieties across its season and includes an $8 apple voucher with admission. Chandler’s Orchard & Country Market grows the most varieties in this guide, with 50. For apple picking without paying admission, Anderson Orchard has nearly 30 varieties across more than 100 acres and is open daily, and Pleasant View Orchard and Tuttle Orchards also charge no admission.

Check height limits before visiting: Russell lists a 44-inch minimum on three rides, Piney Acres requires 42 inches for its tube slide, and Conner Prairie’s barrel train has a 48-inch maximum.

Free and Low-Cost Pumpkin Patches

Hogan Farms, Anderson Orchard, Spencer Farm, Tuttle Orchards, Chandler’s Orchard & Country Market and Pleasant View Orchard have no admission fee, allowing visitors to pay for the activities or purchases they choose. Anderson Orchard (Mooresville, IN)

Anderson Orchard in Mooresville grows nearly 30 apple varieties across more than 100 acres, with U-pick apples available daily during the season. The orchard also offers U-pick sunflowers, and its pumpkin patch opened in late September. Free children’s activities include a straw pile, swings, playground and education center. Apples and other produce are also available from the Apple Barn.

A petting zoo runs October 3–25, and Trunk or Treat is October 30 from 6–9 p.m.

Chandler’s Orchard & Country Market in Fillmore grows 50 apple varieties across its growing year, with U-pick availability changing as varieties ripen. The farm posts current picking updates on Facebook. Mums are also available.

The country store sells jams, jellies, take-and-bake pies, cheeses, sauces, fresh produce and locally produced pasture-raised meats. Apple Annie’s Tasty Café is open Saturdays and Sundays.

Pleasant View Orchard in Fairland is a 40-acre orchard growing more than 30 apple varieties. The U-pick pumpkin patch is open daily, with tractor-pulled wagon rides to the patch on weekends. A playground is also available for children.

The orchard hosts free Saturday live music October 10 and 17, generally from 2–5 p.m., along with a wine tasting October 17 from noon–6 p.m. Silly Safaris presents a live animal show October 24 at 3 p.m., with a special treat for children who attend in costume.

Fall schedules can change because of weather, crop availability and field conditions. Apple varieties and other U-pick crops depend on what is ready to harvest.

For ticketed farms and festivals, check current admission and activity pricing before visiting. Pumpkins, hayrides, rides and other attractions may be included with admission at one destination and charged separately at another.

After Halloween, Zionsville runs Smashin’ Pumpkins, where pumpkins are composted rather than sent to landfill.
