The IMAX Theater at the Indiana State Museum shows major theatrical releases along with documentary and educational films on a six-story, 84-foot-wide screen—the largest movie screen in Indiana. Many of the documentaries run about 45 minutes, and both 2D and 3D films are shown. Museum admission is not required, and an IMAX ticket includes free parking in the White River State Park garage and $2 off museum admission. Concessions include popcorn, candy, coffee and tea, with local beer and wine available for adults.

The oversized screen and powerful surround sound are noticeably different from a standard movie theater. In 3D screenings, special glasses add depth, so objects can appear to extend into the theater. Some films are also shown in IMAX 70mm, a large-format film process available at relatively few theaters.

Accessibility & sensory note: ADA-compliant elevators reach the theater, and the museum has accessible parking, power-door entrances and accessible restrooms. IMAX sound can include deep bass and sudden loud effects, so visitors who are sensitive to noise should keep this in mind before deciding to go.

Libraries

Public libraries can be a good source of free indoor activities for tweens and teens, including gaming, Dungeons & Dragons, art and craft projects, makerspaces, clubs, workshops and volunteer opportunities. Several of the libraries below explicitly welcome nonresidents to teen programs or public spaces, while others set access requirements by program. We note those details in each entry so families can see what is available before visiting.

Borrowing from other Indiana libraries: Before purchasing a nonresident library card, check whether the library you want to use has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with your home library. If it does, eligible resident cardholders can borrow there without paying for a separate card. If not, Indiana’s Public Library Access Card (PLAC) provides borrowing privileges at public libraries across the state; the fee is $70 for one year as of October 2026.
